Here there be process: Sonatina for Brass Quintet

I've been looking for something like this for years: the complete process of composing a piece of music. If you're not a musician, try skimming through the text and mainly listening to the different mp3 samples. This is a good demonstration of chunking and working in passes.

Click on the picture to get to David Wilken's "The Composition Process: Sonatina for Brass Quintetto".

  1. Hi Doran, thanks for the link! I hope you'll continue to write up more about inspiration and the creative process in English. Of course, there's always Google translate, so I'll try to keep an eye on your blog anyway.

I take a similar approach (using chunking, for example) to teaching and practicing instrumental technique as well as compositional technique. For me, it's about taking care of the details so that you can realize whatever your creative inspiration dictates in the music. I would think this can apply to virtually any creative process.

    Thanks!

    Dave

  2. Hey David! Thanks for commenting. I'm definitely going to continute updating the English blog (this one), so you're very welcome to keep an eye on it :)

I didn't quite get this sentence: "taking care of the details so that you can realize whatever your creative inspiration dictates". Do you think you could elaborate a little about this?
